Short Course on Quantum Foundations
15-19 September 2025
Event Address: C5/262, Física Teòrica: Informació i Fenòmens Quàntics Facultat de Ciències, Edifici C5 Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona E-08193 Bellaterra (Barcelona)
The purpose of this short course on the foundations of quantum mechanics is to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to the core principles, mathematical frameworks, and conceptual insights that underpin quantum theory. Unlike courses that emphasize applications of quantum mechanics in areas such as quantum computing or advanced materials, this course approaches quantum mechanics from a foundational perspective, addressing deep questions about the nature of quantum phenomena and their implications for our understanding of reality. While the primary aim is to engage with the conceptual and theoretical aspects of quantum mechanics— superposition, entanglement, nonlocality, and measurement—participants will also learn how foundational questions have historically led to revolutionary practical breakthroughs. Examples include the development of quantum technologies like quantum cryptography and quantum teleportation, both rooted in foundational studies.
This course is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application, catering to students (Bachelors’ and Masters’) and researchers from diverse backgrounds. It aims to demystify the complexities of quantum phenomena, such as superposition, entanglement, and nonlocality, by presenting them in a structured and accessible format. There will be 6
modules of 5 hours each. Each module will have 3 hours of lecture and 2 hours of problem-solving.
The pre-requisites for the course are familiarity with linear algebra and probability theory.
